Why Shelter?
A true escape in every sense of the word, Shelter Malua is an antidote to the grind of modern life.
Created in collaboration with local creatives, we have reimagined a seaside hideaway to create a completely unique experience, while retaining the simple heritage of the 1970’s fibro shack.
In an era where every second coastal holiday home looks the same - whitewashed walls, cheap and shiny materials and a distinct lack of soul - we want to celebrate the beach homes of yesteryear.
Together, Jess and Tiernan have reimagined this simple beach shack, transforming it into a cosy and inviting home, whilst retaining its nostalgic charm. The interior spaces have been updated with careful consideration of every detail - from the custom plywood cabinetry and bespoke furniture, to the eclectic collection of art, ceramics and homewares sourced by Tiernan.
The native gardens are a labour of love for Tiernan who lives spends full weekends out in the yard whenever he visits.

● Our Story
Our story
We both grew up spending summers on the road with our parents— carload full of chaos, long days on the beach, playing music barefoot, and backyard the bonfire. Those simple, early experiences of freedom, creativity, and joy became the heartbeat of our childhood summers.
Today, that vision lives on in what we have created at Shelter Malua. A getaway rooted in getting back to basics, away from the devices and business of modern life. Our shack sits sympathetically in the landscape, surrounded by towering gums and coastal banksias, it’s a space we retreat to when we feel a little burnt out or disconnected from eachother and nature.
Our favourite memories here are many, but include cooking a meal together and sharing it on the balcony overlooking the little cove of Garden Bay, long days spent with a book and some snacks down on the grassy knoll by the sand, having a sunset kombucha by the fire pit as the waves gently roll in, seeing dolphins and whales at golden hour in the morning from the deck and taking Hercules on sunset walks on the Munjip Trail coastalk walk that winds its away around the stunning coastline here.
